Gerrit Oomen
Fieldworker - General Manager
In January 2020, together with my wife Gretchen and our children, moved to Malawi. As the general director, I am primarily responsible for achieving the foundation's objectives.
In April 2021, I was asked to serve as the general director for Timotheos Malawi, overseeing projects supported by Canada, the United States, and the Netherlands. It’s a pleasure to introduce myself to you from here.
Since I was six years old, Malawi has frequently been a topic of discussion in our home, as my father felt called to work here. When I was 15, we moved from the Netherlands to the United States where my father completed his theological studies and learned English. It wasn’t until 2002 that my parents relocated to Malawi with my younger siblings. I stayed behind in the U.S. to continue my education and started a relationship with a Canadian woman of Dutch heritage. We got married in 2004 and settled in Canada. In January 2020, we moved to Malawi, where we now live with seven of our eight children.
In Canada, I held various management roles in the construction industry and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theology in 2019. Since 2013, I have been involved with Timotheos. In 2015, Timotheos Canada was established, and I served as treasurer until September 2019, when I was employed by Timotheos Canada to oversee Malawi-based projects funded by Canada.
We are grateful that, since April 2021, the teams in Malawi working for Canada, the U.S., and the Netherlands have been united, enabling us to move forward together. We have an incredible team, and despite the challenges we have faced, we look to the future with trust and optimism.
We hope and pray that our work will be blessed—not just in helping and creating opportunities for those in need, but above all, in seeing hearts transformed by the Holy Spirit. I am often reminded of Mark 8:36: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” This is also true for our work here. We strive to provide for their physical needs, but what a tremendous blessing it would be if their souls are saved, and we are privileged to be part of that mission.
